Area of Interactions: Human Ingenuity
Unit Question: How can I accomplish what seems to be impossible?

Using the Design Cycle and a box of toothpicks, create a bridge that meets the following requirements:
  • Your bridge should cross over an index card.
  • Your bridge should be 4 - 5 inches high.
  • Your bridge should 3 - 5 inches wide.
  • Your bridge should hold at least 50 pounds.

Investigate

  • We investigated a few categories of designs. We decided to do an arch bridge. Arch bridges are structurally sound, strong, and distribute weight well. They are good for spanning long, open surfaces; perfect for what we need to accomplish.

Plan

  • We drew our design. Which was going to be a traditional bridge with a lot of cross struts.

Create

We started with the ends of the bridge, filled the middle in, and then added a bunch of cross struts.

Evaluate

Our bridge fit all of the requirements and held 127 pounds. Overall, we did a great job, and I think we got full points on the assignment.
